The University is awash with reminders of man's constant search for the Divine. The student body of the university, OUSU, provides a more complete resource guide to students from many different religious traditions on their site in the "Welfare, Religion" section (see link). Since they are the only ones I can personally attest to, below are some useful notes for Muslims on campus taking the time to reflect on one's purpose:

Prayer Direction

  • For Muslims seeking to answer the 5 daily call to prayers, bowing to the oneness of God, an easy way to remember the Prayer direction toward the qiblah (unifying direction for prayer) is to recall that it is toward the direction of Cowley road (view map)
  • A good resource for locating the qibla is: www.qiblalocator.com

Jummah (Friday Congregation/Sermon)

  • The student Islamic Society (ISOC) jummah prayer is only organized during term time and is held at different venues around the University campus. Join the mailing list at the ISOC website to learn more: www.ouisoc.com

Places to Pray - Mosques & Prayers Spaces in Oxford

  • The Oxford University Islamic Society (OuISOC) has a dedicated prayer room for students in the University of Oxford. It is located in the Robert Hooke Building, Parks Road and is well stocked with copies of the Holy Quran (and a wide variety of translations) and hadith collections. Congregational prayers take place daily. Jumu'ah (Friday) prayers take place each week at 1.15 PM promptly and are a great way to meet Muslim students (there will usually be post-Jumu'ah lunch and socialising). There are toilet and ablution facilities. To register for access to the prayer room, a form must be completed (details on the following page http://ouisoc.com/pages/prayer).
  • Islamic Center on George Street (Only open on weekdays during business hours. There is no jummah held here.)

iPray

"iPray" refers to a handy sign developed after years of being on college campuses and yearning for one.

Why: We've all had funny situations while trying to get our pray on. Well, no worries now!

How: Use the following link to print, fold, and display the sign whenever you need to pray! Specifically, when it's difficult to find an entirely private space.

There's a beautiful saying from the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, commenting on the freedom to pray anywhere on God's green Earth, which says: "The earth has been made for me [and for my Ummah (community)] as a mosque [place for worship] and a pureness [place for dry ablution]; therefore, anyone of my Ummah can pray whenever the time of Prayer is due." (Al-Bukhari)
